Government Benefits - Have you applied?
It is important for widowed people to make sure they apply for all of the government benefits that they are eligible to receive. This should be done as soon as possible, because back payments are time limited. The application guidelines explain in detail. Information for Survivors PDF
Canada Pension Plan Benefits
CPP Benefits are available to eligible family members of deceased CPP contributors who have made sufficient contributions to the Plan.
CPP Death Benefit
A one-time lump-sum payment of up to $2,500 is available, usually to the estate of the deceased, the person paying the funeral expenses, or the spouse or common-law partner. Click here for Service Canada, link to information and application
CPP Survivor's Pension
A monthly pension is available to people whose spouse of common-law partner has died. The eligibility of survivors and payment amount are determined taking into account age, disability, and dependent children. Click here for Service Canada, link to information and link to application
CPP Children's Benefit
A monthly benefit is available to dependent children who are younger than 18 or who are between 18 and 25 and in school full-time. Click here for Service Canada, link to information and link to application
Old Age Security Benefits
Allowance for the Survivor
A monthly benefit is available for low-income widowed spouses or surviving common-law partners who are between 60 and 64 years old and who meet the residency requirements.
Guaranteed Income Supplement
The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) provides additional money, on top of the Old Age Security pension, to low-income seniors living in Canada.
